In East Lancashire, Fraudsters Posing as Police Officers and Couriers Scam Nearly £100,000 from Vulnerable Victim

In East Lancashire, a deeply concerning scam has emerged, with fraudsters resorting to impersonating both police officers and couriers in their ruthless exploitation of vulnerable victims. These nefarious individuals contact their targets, masquerading as law enforcement officers with fictitious names and badge numbers, coercing victims into withdrawing substantial sums of cash on the pretext of safeguarding their funds from alleged fraudulent bank card activity. Subsequently, they deploy bogus "couriers" to collect the cash or valuable possessions. Over the past month, Lancashire Police have apprehended two suspects in connection with these fraudulent activities, leaving victims collectively reeling from losses amounting to £96,500 in both pounds and euros.

This fraudulent operation has cast its wide net over several towns, including Darwen, Blackburn, Accrington, and Oswaldtwistle. This unfortunate incident is reminiscent of previous fake police officer scams that have targeted Lancashire in the past. As a response, the Lancashire Constabulary's Economic Crime Unit is now issuing a public appeal, urging citizens to remain vigilant and well-informed about the insidious tactics employed in courier fraud. By raising awareness and staying informed, individuals can better protect themselves and reduce the chances of these unscrupulous fraudsters succeeding in their endeavors.

The scammers' audacious tactics have not only impacted the financial well-being of their victims but have also left an emotional toll the most vulnerable members of the community.
