A cybercriminal gang allegedly claimed to have infiltrated Sony's networks and made offers to sell stolen data, prompting the corporation to initiate an investigation.
The investigation was started as a result of a RansomedVC listing Sony on its website, which is hosted on Tor, and its assertion that it had infected all Sony computers. RansomedVC is a relatively young ransomware gang.
The hackers vowed not to hold them ransom. Since Sony is refusing to pay, we will sell the data. Information is for sale.
In an effort to back up their allegations, the cybercriminals have offered a number of data, including screenshots and some Java files that appear to allow access to the programmes and source code for Sony's Creators Cloud media production platform.
The website of the RansomedVC group presently lists up to 40 victims, with ransom demands varying from a few thousand dollars to $1 million, depending on the size and revenue of the targeted organisation. Early in 2023, the organisation revealed their first victim.
RansomedVC cited Japanese mobile phone provider NTT Docomo as a victim on its website the same day it named Sony as a target.
