A U.S Citizen, Peaches Stego, was arrested and charged with one count of wire fraud which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, for allegedly stealing Millions from an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor man, gaining an amount that reached up to $2.8 Million over the course of four years on which she met on a dating site.
It was reported that the suspect met the survivor between 2016-2017 on a dating site when living in Manhattan, New York. Initially, in 2017, she allegedly asked the man if he could loan her money to pay for a lawyer. The Department of Justice said Ms Stergo was complaining that her lawyer was "refusing to release funds from an injury settlement," though bank records allegedly show no such settlement existed. She reportedly made fake email accounts and created counterfeit letters and invoices impersonating a TD. According to the DOJ, the man wrote Peaches Stergo 62 checks for a collective $2.8 Million.
“Stergo forged documents and impersonated a bank employee in exchange for a life of fancy trips, Rolex watches, and luxury purchases," "Today's arrest reemphasises this Office's commitment to seeking justice for victims of financial frauds." DOJ Attorney Williams said.
