The UK Government announced that they have been working with mobile phone networks and in Autumn this year, they will transmit emergency alert messages to mobile phones and tablets.The UK has an emergency alert system, which was successfully used during the Covidl9 pandemic, to inform the public of curfew times at night, when streets were being sprayed.
The UK government, website https://www.gov.uk/alerts, provides all the information and a video explaining how it will work. To summarise you will receive alerts based on your current location, not where you live or work. Also, you do not have to register your number, it is automatic and your personal data is safe.
The Emergency Alerts will only be received on iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later, Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later. It will also is restricted to 4G and 5G phone networks in the UK. The alerts are aimed to saving lives and will cover, terrorist attacks, severe flooding, fires, extreme weather, and public health emergencies.
Emergency alerts will only be sent by the emergency services and government departments, agencies and public bodies that deal with emergencies. You will be allowed to opt out of some emergency alerts, but not the most important ones, that could save your life.
